RURAL SOLUTIONS TO CONFRONT CLIMATE CHANGE
Rural communities are confronting climate change and need to be seen as full partners in developing any climate policy. Renewable energy now makes up 17 percent of our country’s energy sources. Most of the wind energy is being built in rural communities. If we care about climate change, we need to care about our rural neighbors. Rural voices and ideas will make climate policies stronger. Here are just a few things rural communities, family farmers, and ranchers are doing now to confront climate change and get back to regenerative agricultural practices:
Using water sensors to reduce usage and protect aquifers.
Planting cover crops to reduce soil erosion and serve as a carbon sink.
No-till farming, which means leaving the stubble from last year’s crops in the ground, saving time and fuel and providing a carbon sink.
Growing biofuels, from corn to switch grass, that produce less greenhouse gas emissions than traditional fossil fuels.
Feeding the stock from biofuels to cattle and hogs as a high-energy by-product instead of adding it to landfills.
Turning manure into energy.
Rotational grazing to protect grasses and add to the biodiversity of plants. This also prevents overgrazing and creates a better ecosystem, including more organic matter in the soil and increased drought resistance.
Installing clean energy from windmills to solar.
Expand hemp production to (among other things) replace oil-based plastics and absorb CO2.
